Kumbali Lake Retreat is a relatively new eco-friendly lodge on the beautiful shores of Lake Malawi. Owned and run by the same family who own Kumbali Country Lodge, Kumbali Lake Retreat comes with the same familiar ‘home-away-from-home’ feel with comfort and nature as the main focus. Not to mention, the food is to die for! The manager of the Kumbali properties, Jess Willet, is also an extraordinary world trained chef - if that doesn’t sway you, I don’t know what will. The property is built into the side of Lifuwu Hill which is home to the indigenous Samanga Monkey (don’t leave any food unattended) and offers a wide range of activities. You can either relax in a hammock on the beach (make sure you protect yourself from them sun, it’s very easy for your morning relaxation to turn into a full blown siesta, especially with the sound of the waves hitting the beach). Or you can go for a hike on the nearby hills - the views are definitely worth it. And in the early evening? You guessed it - a sundowner cruise with the fish eagles. Have your camera ready so you can snap a picture of the majestic animals picking up a fish from the water.
The lodge offers 4 individually thatched chalets, a 2-bedroom family cottage (Hillview) and a bungalow sleeping 8; each with a private outdoor lavatory and hot water shower, private khonde, walk-in mosquito nets, double or twin beds, ample storage space and breathtaking views of the world-famous lake.
